Museum History

The Drover’s Camp Association was formed in 1997 to recognise and preserve the rich history of the pioneers of Australia’s outback as it was felt that a significant piece of this history was at risk of being lost.  The Drover’s Camp Association has now become a successful organisation boasting names like John Williamson, Slim Dusty and Ted Egan as foundation members who were integral in the successful formation of the Drover’s Camp Association.

The Drover’s Camp Association operates from their impressive facilities established in 2005 located just outside Camooweal on the Barkly Highway.  This facility houses a history of Australia’s pioneering past through the Droving Heritage Centre (museum) and bush art gallery where all the portraits of our drovers done by the artist Yvonne Dorward are housed, along with memorabilia donated by families or relatives of drovers.
